Adenoids, new tubes, and other not so fun things

Brayden got his first set of tubes in his ears right around 7 months old last June. We went a couple months without ear infections, which prior to the surgery we had back to back to back constantly. But, then in August the ear infections came back and we continued to have them pretty regularly. So, we went back to the ENT the week after Christmas and he decided it was time for the next step which was adenoid removal. In order to take advantage of our deductible from 2011 we scheduled his surgery for a couple days later.

The surgery went well and Brayden was recovering well, until he was unfortunate enough to come down with Hand, Foot, Mouth Disease on the third day of recovery. The poor guy had blisters all over his throat and his body. The throat blisters were the worst and he cried a lot and didn't want to swallow anything - he would just let the saliva drool out of his mouth instead of swallowing. We struggled getting him to drink or eat anything until the blisters starting going away. It was not fun at all.

However, I'm writing this on March 13th and (knock on wood) we have not had any ear infections since the surgery. We also have had a lot less nose issues than before too which has always been the pre-cursor to his ear infections. The doctor did say his adenoids were pretty big when he took them out so so far we are very happy we went ahead with the surgery.

Oh and during all this time, Brayden had a black eye that he got on Christmas from trying to stand on a stuffed animal. So, he was pretty pathetic...

This was quite a while after it happened but you can still see it in this picture
